Recent temps are much more suited for Fall, but for the last few days, in Albuquerque, it has been a bit hotter. It has been hanging around the high 70s.

For the November/December 2025 issue of Shadow & Light Magazine the focus will be on a few regional notables. The lineup is still being worked on but there are some stellar names already in: Allen Bourne, Eric McCollum, Steve Immel, Dan Shaffer (image, above), Amy Ditto, Marie Maher, and Helen K. Garber. Eerie Photo of Hyena Stalking Abandoned Mining Town Wins Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Capturing the unusual intersection between nature and abandoned urban spaces, Wim’s photograph is a haunting yet captivating image of a brown hyena wandering through the skeletal remains of Kolmanskop, Namibia’s long-deserted diamond mining town. The shot was taken with a camera trap and is the result of a decade-long effort that began when Van den Heever first discovered the animal’s tracks at the site.

The Stories Behind Some of the Defining Photos of the Last 40 Years

It is one of the most iconic images in history: an unknown man confronting a line of tanks in the middle of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, defying an entire government.

Reuters photographer Arthur Tsang was there in 1989, watching from a hotel balcony nearby. At the time, he had no idea how significant and symbolic that moment would be.

“When I released the shutter, it didn’t occur to me that ‘Wow, this is a great shot,’ ” Tsang told the South China Morning Post many years later. “You couldn’t foresee the impact of the image.”

Thirteen Stunning and Award-Winning Black-and-White Photographs

Black and white photography dates back to 1826 and while color images eventually took over, monochrome photos still deliver an unmatched impact. The 2025 Exposure One Awards honor the beauty of black and white.

“Long regarded as one of photography’s most enduring languages, black and white continues to reveal the essential truths of form, light, and shadow,” the contest writes in a statement. “The work of this year’s honorees affirms its lasting relevance, offering images that are both timeless and uncompromising in their vision.”
