Recently, on Facebook, I read a thread about calls-for-entry and how they may (or not) do a lot for you as far as promotion for publishing or gallery shows. It was a very revealing essay on comparing calls-for-entry and well-respected portfolio reviews.

This last weekend I was honored to be a reviewer for Review Santa Fe. It was an online event and the organizers (Center/staff) did a great job of setting up the whole process so it was, basically, a no-brainer. I conducted 12 reviews over two days and discovered 6 photographers with whom I will be working with to publish them in future issues of Shadow & Light Magazine. At the outset they will be featured in a new Page on the site, which will be named, "Extras." It will be a short preview of their work, and it will aid me in curating the magazine more efficiently.

Please let me know the results of your call-for-entry and whether or not participation resulted in a positive outcome. If you want to email me directly with your story about the goods and the bads in relation to calls-for-entry/portfolio reviews, just click on the button at the bottom of this section.

* My current show is under the auspices of the New Mexico Cancer Center. It is a benefit for the Center. The theme of this show is: Movers and Shakers – Works by Artists Who Teach, Lead and Inspire. This event is very well attended and sales can be brisk. There are usually around 400 pieces from 20+ artists covering a wide range of media. Show dates are August 23-November 19, 2021.

Due to Covid, the opening was cancelled. If, however, you would like to see my work as well as that of 22 other artists, please contact Regina Held, here to arrange a guided Saturday tour of the facility, where you will be able to view and purchase work.

I am featuring images from my landscape series, "Language of the Land" (image, Fajada Butte). All images can be viewed (with prices), here.

‘Living in Long Shadows’ is a New SmugMug Film Featuring Andy Best

SmugMug has debuted its latest film that features photographer and filmmaker Andy Best. Called “Living in Long Shadows,” the film follows the Best family as they trek across the American Southwest.

Andy Best is likely most accurately described as an adventurer and explorer as much as he is a photographer. He often lives in a camper as he road trips across the country with his family — he has a wife and two kids.

Best, who is also one of Sony’s founding Alpha Imaging Collective members, has photographed countless outdoor adventures thanks to the nomadic lifestyle he chooses to live.
