When “The Horse” issue of Shadow & Light Magazine (SLM) was released a few issues ago to rave reviews, it was suggested by SLM special projects editor, Helen K. Garber, that we should do a stand-alone issue with a few new portfolios and no commercial ads.
With this issue, Helen’s request was fulfilled. There are no commercial ads and only a couple promotional offerings. One is from Helen, who was a juror for “The Horse,” highlighting her “Art as Alchemy” series and one from the other “The Horse” juror, Tony Bonanno, which features his newer release, “Horse of the Sea, the White Horses of the Camargue.”
The two new portfolios are from Lynne Pomeranz and Susan Paulson. Pomeranz has focused on the plight of wild horse for more than 20 years and is fully involved in projects that serve to aid in the continuing effort to protect these horses in their natural habitats. At the end of Pomeranz’s portfolio there are two links with more information.
Paulson, who started out twenty- years-ago photographing “everything,” changed her field of interest due to a medical situation and began a new image-making career of capturing horses in a cinematic story-telling manner.
Like the rest of the portfolios featured in this issue, both Pomeranz and Paulson are fully dedicated to the preservation of these animals and seek to display their images in a way that is only befitting these wonderful animals.
Susan Friedman (image, below), Keron Psillas, Mary Aiu, Tom Chambers, Chris Stevens-Yu (cover image), Susan Kanfer, Oliver Klink, Landry Major, and Tori Gagne also return with portfolios that were in that issue and will continue to delight us with their imagery.
Our intrepid judges, Helen K. Garber and Tony Bonanno, both acknowledged equine professionals, found the process very challenging as the votes were fittingly close at the end. We thank Helen and Tony for their dedication to the process.
The photographers who made it into this Special Issue went from the Camargue region of France to the plains of Utah and many places far and near to follow their passion and present wonderfully compelling images for your viewing pleasure. Some were photographed closer to home in stables and fields and out behind the barn.
There are more than 100 images of horses to satisfy even the most discerning image-maker and viewer.
We see these beautiful animals running free, playing, fighting, posing, thinking, jumping, and comforting. With taut muscles straining beneath colorful hides, we are immediately drawn to their fine-art presence no matter the activity.
By clicking on the link below you will be able to receive this Special Issue at the pre-sale price of only $10. When it is officially released the the general public, it will be at the regular price of $16.50.
***The Deadline for the pre-sale offering of $10 is January 31, 20924.
